We welcome all strong, implementable efforts to reduce the impacts of global warming on our communities and economy that match our values and mission. We support reducing carbon pollution and promoting just and sustainable broadly-shared prosperity by:
- Incentivizing homegrown clean energy businesses that create good jobs.
- Investing in communities disproportionately harmed by carbon pollution.
- Transitioning from imported coal power to local clean energy sources.
- Providing consumers with cleaner, more efficient fuel and energy choices.
- Accounting for the true price we pay for carbon pollution in our economy.
The Alliance reviews all relevant policy proposals and supports those that are consistent with our mission and principles. To date the Alliance supports two policy proposals: the Carbon Pollution Accountability Act and a Clean Fuels Standard.
The Carbon Pollution Accountability Act (SB 5283 // HB 1314) would:
- Create a new market-based program that limits carbon pollution and requires major emitters to pay for their emissions.
- Strengthen pollution limits gradually over time, allowing emitters time to transition to cleaner technology and improved operations.
- Generate about $1 billion annually for the state to reinvest in promoting further emissions reductions, expanding transit options and maintaining transportation infrastructure, supporting public education, and investing in low income families’ transition to the clean energy economy.
A Clean Fuels Standard would:
- Require fuel distributers to gradually reduce the pollution content of their fuels.
- Bring more alternatives to petroleum — like electric cars, biofuels and renewable natural gas — to consumers.
- Reduce air pollution, lower carbon emissions, and keep more of our transportation dollars in our local economy.
